As a Homeschool Mom I always wonder if I am making the right decision when it comes to what I teach. I want to make sure that I feel comfortable, and that CG and SA are interested and learning. I think and rethink decisions sometimes as I am sure most Homeschool Moms do.
I started elementary education with US Geography, State Presidents, and a visual timeline. We also studied 6 events, places and people in history. I have seen and heard that Ancient history is usually taught first.
Why?
How do children learn about Ancient Egypt if they don't understand Geography and time lines. I felt that it made sense to teach from where we are and then expand out.
Geography
Local community, State, Country, World.
Timeline
Family tree, historic people, inventions.

Oh, I start where they're interested! LOL I'd like to say there's a "rhyme and reason" to our history curriculum, but it's more child-led. My daughter enjoys History Pockets and completed North American Explorers this year and is working on a US Geography workbook now (that she chose). My oldest just finished up the History Channel's "America: The Story of Us" videos, book and episode guides. And my youngest watching Liberty Kids. So, I guess we're doing American History this year! LOL
ReplyDeleteI believe that because you are the teacher you have to be comfortable with the method and content of the curriculum. How you teach history is completely up to you.
ReplyDeleteIn public school they teach the basics of history from ancient to more current, then from about sixth grade to eleventh they go into each one more in depth. That's what is so great about homeschooling, we can teach the way that best suits our children and us.

DeleteI think you are right! Timeline and geography are so important to history. We read History Spine books - Child's History of the World and Susan Bauer's Story of the World.
DeleteThis year we joined with 4 other homeschooling families and created a history co-op. We meet weekly and study one historical culture at a time for 6-8 weeks. The kids absolutely love it. We started with the Celts, moved to the Vikings and are now studying the Scythians.
