Map Making

We made treasure maps. This was a great project for the kids and easy. The hardest part was waiting for the first step to dry.

1 1/2 Cup Coarse salt ( CG and SA used pickling salt, and I used the salt and sand mix that we use on the driveway. I wanted the stones in it.)
1 Cup flour
1 1/2 cup water
Mix the salt and flour then add the water to your desired thickness. Paint it on the cardboard and then let sit for two days to dry.

Any cardboard will work, we cut up a box.

mix the flour salt and water

Leave it to dry. The thicker areas will take longer.

She had a plan from the beginning and was ready.

We discussed and looked at pictures online of other maps versus landscapes.

The edges of the board are frayed and jagged making it look like an old map.
Enjoy!

    1. We did have a great time planning our maps. It would be great for the pirate theme. That reminds me of the pirate stuff we did when the kids were little, We had an eye patch a colored parrot hooked with a clothespin on our shoulder. We even picked out pirate names, and learned pirate words. Kids having fun!

  3. This was quite a project! Good for you! Wow! My son has just started making drawings that he walks around the house with, as if they were maps, pointing, and talking! I believe kids go through a map phase at one time or another! I think my son, who has Down syndrome, may be going through a map phase!

  6. In our homeschool history co-op we study civilizations and peoples of the past for 6-10 weeks per group. The first week of the co-op always involves a map so the children can see where the people used to live. We made salt-dough maps which sound similar to what you did, glitter maps and cookie maps. - What a good idea to do a treasure map with the same concept.
    Thank You

  7. These maps turned out great! We learn how to draw one part of the world each week--this would be fun to add to that. Thanks for the idea.
